One of the most frequent questions I’m asked during interviews is, “Can you share some names of Go-Giver-type companies?” In a sense, the question makes me smile a bit because — in actuality — there are only Go-Giver-type people. 🙂 But, I think I understand what they mean; a company whose culture aligns with The Go-Giver Way.
So, what is The Go-Giver Way? It’s one where the person (or company) operates through The Five Laws as described in The Go-Giver book: The Laws of…Value; Compensation; Influence; Authenticity; and Receptivity.
If they do that, they (the person or the company) qualify.
When I’m asked for examples, it often surprises people when I advise them to simply look at any company that has a record of sustained profitability.
The reason is that, assuming they are operating in a truly free-market economy — without benefiting from cronyism or corporatism — the only way they can sustain profitability is by providing exceptional value to many people on an ongoing, consistent basis.
They must give more in value than they take in payment, while still making a very healthy profit.
They must serve many people with their exceptional value.
They must place other peoples’ interests first. (Please don’t confuse this with being a doormat but with having a focus on the wants, needs and desires of your prospects, customers and clients and — for the company — their employees.)
They must stay congruent with their true, authentic core.
They must be willing to receive and — be highly profitable!
Examples range from the venerable biggies such as Southwest Airlines and Apple to the local Sala Thai restaurant in my own town of Jupiter, Florida.
What companies (from international to local) come to your mind that fit the above description? And, more importantly, why?
I do love my Southwest Airlines! I think of the Communications company I wrote about in the last blog….Cox Communications. They really did make me the winner in the whole process.
Christie: Indeed, I agree with you completely on BOTH counts!
Yes So glad you wrote this, as I also saw the comment on your FB wall and having to provide an example of what a Go-Giver meant and agreed with you completely. So very glad you wrote this post.
Thank you, Carly. I appreciate your very kind comment!
